Walt's Three Favorite Things: Christmas Break Edition
Walt's Three Favorite Things: Christmas Break Edition
The Crystal Coast of North Carolina transforms into something magical during Christmas break. While summer brings the crowds and the energy, winter reveals a quieter, more intimate side of our coastal paradise. As a real estate agent who's spent 7.5 years exploring every corner of Beaufort, Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, and the surrounding areas, I've discovered that some of the best experiences don't require a hefty price tag—just an appreciation for the simple beauty that surrounds us.
Here are my three favorite ways to spend Christmas break on the Crystal Coast, each offering something special for locals and visitors alike.
1. The Elliott Coues Trail at Fort Macon State Park
If you haven't discovered the Elliott Coues Trail at Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach, you're missing one of the most serene experiences our area has to offer. This 3-mile loop is perfectly balanced—half the journey takes you along the oceanside where you can breathe in the salt air and watch the waves crash against the shore, while the other half winds through a canopy of majestic live oaks on the sound side.
What makes winter the perfect time for this trail? The crowds thin out considerably. During summer, Fort Macon bustles with beachgoers and tourists, but from late December through early spring, you'll often find yourself sharing the path with just a few fellow nature lovers and maybe some coastal birds. The free parking is another bonus—no need to worry about finding a spot or feeding a meter.
The sound-side portion of the trail is particularly stunning in winter. Those ancient live oaks, draped with Spanish moss, create a cathedral-like atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, where the only soundtrack is birdsong and rustling leaves. For anyone working in real estate like me, or anyone with a busy life juggling family and career, these quiet moments in nature are priceless.
Getting There: Fort Macon State Park is located at 2303 E Fort Macon Rd, Atlantic Beach, NC 28512. The Elliott Coues Trail is accessible from the main parking area.
2. Maree in Historic Beaufort
Tucked away in the historic district of Beaufort, Maree is the kind of place that makes you slow down and appreciate the finer things. This carefully curated shop features a small selection of items from across Europe and beyond—pieces chosen not for trends, but for their tradition, craftsmanship, and quality.
What sets Maree apart is the experience. This isn't just shopping; it's discovery. You'll find timeless pieces alongside more contemporary finds, all thoughtfully selected to make everyday life feel a little more special. Whether you're looking for a unique gift or something to treat yourself, the shop offers items you won't find anywhere else in the Crystal Coast.
But here's my perfect Maree afternoon: Start with a cortado—their coffee is exceptional. Browse the collection, maybe pick up a few treasures. Then step outside into historic Beaufort and make your way to the waterfront. Time it right, and you'll catch one of those spectacular coastal sunsets that paint the sky in shades of orange and pink. Follow it up with dinner at one of Beaufort's wonderful restaurants, and you've got yourself an ideal winter evening.
Location: Maree is located in the historic district of Beaufort, NC. The waterfront is just a short stroll away, perfect for sunset watching.
3. Emerald Isle Beach Driving Season
Here's where I get to tell you about one of my favorite Crystal Coast traditions, and one that perfectly captures the freedom and beauty of coastal living.
It was a crisp January morning, and the forecast was calling for clean waves—something that doesn't happen every day on our section of the Atlantic. I loaded my surfboard into my truck, grabbed my wetsuit, and headed to Emerald Isle. This was during beach driving season, which runs from September through April, when vehicles are allowed on certain sections of the beach.
There's something almost surreal about driving along the hard-packed sand with the ocean on one side and the dunes on the other. That morning, the beach was nearly empty—just me, a handful of other surfers, and the pelicans. I drove right up to the break, where small but perfect waves were peeling left down the sandbar.
I suited up right there next to my truck, paddled out, and spent the next hour and a half in the water. The winter ocean has a clarity you don't get in summer, and the cold makes you feel incredibly alive. When the waves slowed down and my arms were properly tired, I walked back to the truck, rinsed off with the water jug I'd brought, changed into dry clothes, and headed to my first showing of the day.
That's the beauty of beach driving season in Emerald Isle. Whether you're surfing, fishing, or just want to park and watch the sunrise with your morning coffee, you have direct access to miles of beautiful beach. You can pull right up to your favorite spot, enjoy it in relative solitude, and go about your day. It's one of those privileges of living on the Crystal Coast that never gets old.
Beach Driving Details: Emerald Isle allows beach driving from September through April with a permit. It's an affordable way to access the beach and enjoy everything from surfing to fishing to peaceful morning walks.
Making the Most of Your Crystal Coast Christmas Break
What I love about all three of these experiences is their accessibility. They don't require expensive equipment, advance reservations, or elaborate planning. They're simple pleasures that remind us why people are drawn to the Crystal Coast in the first place—natural beauty, authentic experiences, and a slower pace of life.
Whether you're a longtime resident, a recent transplant, or someone considering making the Crystal Coast your home, winter is an excellent time to explore these hidden gems. The crowds are gone, the weather is mild (most days), and there's something special about having our beaches, trails, and charming downtown areas largely to yourself.
As someone who helps people find their dream homes in Beaufort, Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, and Jacksonville, I can tell you that it's these kinds of experiences that make people fall in love with our area. It's not just about the property—it's about the lifestyle, the community, and the endless opportunities to connect with nature and each other.
So this Christmas break, skip the expensive tourist attractions and the overcrowded destinations. Lace up your hiking shoes, grab a cortado, or load up the truck for the beach. The Crystal Coast is waiting, and winter might just be the best time to discover what makes it so special.
