Best Things to Do on the Crystal Coast in the Fall: Fishing, Beaches, Boating & Coastal Adventures
Fall might just be the best-kept secret on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina.
When most people think about visiting the Crystal Coast, they picture summer vacations, crowded beaches, and long days in the sun. But ask someone who lives here year-round, and they'll probably tell you that September, October, and November are some of the best months to enjoy everything our coast has to offer.
The summer crowds have thinned out, the temperatures become more comfortable, and there's still plenty to do outdoors.
From fall fishing and beach driving to boating and camping at Cape Lookout, here are some of my favorite things to do on the Crystal Coast during the fall.
1. Fall Fishing on the Crystal Coast
If you enjoy fishing, fall is one of the most exciting times of the year to be on the North Carolina coast.
As the water temperatures begin to cool, several popular species become more active throughout the sounds, inlets, beaches, and offshore waters.
Some of the fish anglers target during the fall include:
-
Speckled trout: A favorite for inshore anglers fishing creeks, marshes, and deeper channels as temperatures cool.
-
Red drum: Fall is a great time to target red drum from the surf and inshore waters.
-
Spanish mackerel: Often available during the warmer part of fall before they migrate south.
-
King mackerel: A popular target for anglers fishing nearshore and offshore waters.
-
Bluefish: Frequently caught along the beaches and around the inlets.
-
Flounder: Found in coastal waters, although harvest seasons and regulations can be restrictive.
-
False albacore: Fall can bring exciting light-tackle fishing around Cape Lookout and nearby waters.
Whether you're surf fishing at Atlantic Beach, fishing the waters around Beaufort Inlet, or heading offshore from Morehead City, fall offers some incredible opportunities.
Just be sure to check current North Carolina fishing regulations before keeping your catch.
2. Enjoy Less Crowded Beaches and Beach Driving
One of my favorite things about fall on the Crystal Coast is having the beaches back to ourselves.
During the summer, thousands of visitors come to Emerald Isle, Atlantic Beach, and the surrounding communities. Once school starts back, the crowds begin to disappear.
You can enjoy long walks along the shoreline, find a quiet place to relax, or spend an afternoon fishing without the summer crowds.
And here's something that makes fall even better: beach driving!
In Emerald Isle, permitted four-wheel-drive vehicles can access designated sections of the beach during the off-season, generally from September through April.
Imagine loading up your truck with fishing rods, beach chairs, and a cooler, driving onto the beach, and spending the afternoon enjoying the ocean.
It's one of those experiences that makes living on the Crystal Coast so special.
Make sure you obtain the appropriate permit and check the town's current beach-driving dates, access points, and restrictions before heading onto the sand.
3. Fall Boating Around Beaufort and Morehead City
Just because summer is over doesn't mean boating season has to end.
In fact, some of my favorite boating days happen during the fall.
With fewer boats on the water and comfortable temperatures, it's a great time to explore the waterways around Beaufort, Morehead City, and the surrounding barrier islands.
One of our favorite destinations is the backside of Shackleford Banks, where you can anchor your boat, relax, and enjoy the scenery.
If you're feeling a little more adventurous, head toward Cape Lookout National Seashore.
Fall boating can be fantastic, but conditions change quickly. Shorter days, stronger winds, and cooler water temperatures make checking the marine forecast especially important.
4. Take a 4x4 Camping Adventure to Cape Lookout
If you own a four-wheel-drive vehicle and enjoy the outdoors, this might be one of the coolest fall adventures you can experience in Carteret County.
You can take a vehicle ferry from Davis over to the Core Banks portion of Cape Lookout National Seashore.
Once you arrive, you're entering a completely different world.
Miles of undeveloped beaches, sand dunes, fishing opportunities, and incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Pack your camping gear, fishing rods, food, and supplies, and spend the weekend exploring.
You can drive along designated beach routes, set up camp in permitted areas, fish from the surf, and enjoy the stars without the light pollution you find in more developed areas.
Keep in mind that the Davis vehicle ferry serves South Core Banks, not the Cape Lookout Lighthouse area. Reaching the lighthouse requires a separate trip.
You'll also need to plan carefully. A capable 4x4, vehicle ferry reservations, required permits, and proper recovery equipment are important.
Most importantly, keep an eye on the weather. Fall can bring beautiful conditions, but strong winds, coastal storms, and rough surf can develop quickly.
5. Enjoy Local Restaurants Without the Summer Crowds
Another great thing about fall on the Crystal Coast is being able to enjoy local restaurants without the peak summer crowds.
Downtown Beaufort and Morehead City are two of my favorite places to grab dinner.
In Morehead City, restaurants like Southern Salt, Redfish, and Circa 81 offer great options for a night out.
In Beaufort, you can walk along Front Street, enjoy the waterfront, and find a great place to eat.
Atlantic Beach also has some excellent dining options, including one of my personal favorites, Amos Mosquito's.
During the fall, it's often easier to find parking, get a table, and enjoy a more relaxed evening.
Just remember that some seasonal businesses reduce their hours as winter approaches.
6. Fall Surfing on the Crystal Coast
If you enjoy surfing, fall is one of the best times of the year to catch waves along the Crystal Coast. In fact, I would argue that fall surfing is much better than summer surfing! As low-pressure systems develop offshore and move along the Atlantic, they can produce some excellent swells, creating windows of great surf at Emerald Isle, Atlantic Beach, and other local breaks. The water temperatures begin dropping, so wetsuits become increasingly important, especially as we move into late fall and winter. We've also experienced a relatively quiet hurricane season locally this year, but that doesn't mean we can't get some great waves. Between fewer people in the water, cooler temperatures, and the potential for quality offshore swells, fall is an exciting time to grab your board and head to the beach. Just keep an eye on the surf forecast, rip currents, and changing weather conditions!
7. Fall Golf on the Crystal Coast
If you enjoy golf, October and November might be two of the best months to hit the links on the Crystal Coast! The summer heat and humidity have eased up, the temperatures are comfortable, and it's a great time to get outside and play 18 holes.
We're fortunate to have several great golf courses throughout Carteret County. Beaufort Club is open to the public and offers a beautiful course in Beaufort. Crystal Coast Country Club, located in Pine Knoll Shores, also offers public tee times, and if you're a member of Beaufort Club, you may be able to play there for under $60 through reciprocal arrangements. Morehead City Country Club is a private course, so you'll generally need to be a member or play as a member's guest.
Brandywine Bay Golf Club in Morehead City is making a comeback, and it's exciting to see renewed interest in the course. Another great option is Star Hill Golf Club in Cape Carteret, which offers an enjoyable round of golf.
One of my favorite things about living on the Crystal Coast is that golf doesn't stop when summer ends. In fact, fall might be the best time to play. Whether you're a serious golfer or just enjoy getting outside with friends, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a round of golf while the weather is prime!
8. Experience the Crystal Coast Like a Local
Here's what I think makes fall on the Crystal Coast so special.
The pace of life slows down.
You can ride your bike along the Emerald Isle Path, take a walk on the beach, spend the afternoon fishing, or simply enjoy a beautiful sunset over the water.
You don't have to fight the same summer traffic, and there's a little more room to enjoy everything that makes this area special.
For those of us who call Carteret County home, it's one of the rewards of living here year-round.
Final Thoughts: Is Fall the Best Time to Visit the Crystal Coast?
Summer gets most of the attention, but fall might actually be my favorite time of year here.
The fishing is excellent, the beaches are less crowded, the boating can be fantastic, and the weather is often beautiful.
Whether you're visiting for a weekend or considering making the Crystal Coast your permanent home, I encourage you to experience this area during the fall.
And if you're thinking about relocating to Beaufort, Morehead City, Emerald Isle, Atlantic Beach, or anywhere in Carteret County, give me a call.
